So many times I see weddings where the bride and groom are elaborately dressed in designer outfits, adorned in the most exquisite fine jewellery and covered in accessories from head to toe. They arrive into the venue after their grand entrance into their big fat Asian wedding only to have a tacky-looking garish haar a.k.a flower garland placed over their head, landing on their shoulders like a big necklace, covering their beautiful attire which unfortunately becomes hidden underneath.
The chunky haar becomes a focal point.
Yes, it is tradition but that doesn’t mean it has to look bad! The haar is an aspect of every Asian wedding which is made for the bride and groom to wear… and for that very reason I believe time and thought should be invested into what those haars are going to look like!
Typically, what happens is that whilst planning such a big wedding, purchasing the haar is left right until the last minute, sadly because it is usually forgotten until this moment, and by this point there is no choice but to buy whatever quick option there is. So, when a bride and groom spend months or more deciding how they want to look on their wedding day, a distasteful last minute flower garland ultimately ruins their whole look only because this small detail was not remembered early enough. People tend to forget that they’ll be wearing these garlands for a large part of the wedding and it will also be documented in all the wedding photos and videos too.
Nowadays all sorts of flowers are available and traditions are being modernised. Similarly taking the traditional white and red rose garland, it can be modernised to either be made from roses fitting the colour scheme of the wedding or even different flowers altogether. Why not experiment and be bold with flowers like peonies, orchids with a mix of baby’s breath? Why not make garlands using your favourite flower to make it more personal? Flowers can be available and made into garlands in any colour you can imagine so if you just spend a little bit of time researching the right florist and ordering the flowers in advance; just by paying attention to this one small aspect of the wedding, people would admire your attention to detail and how well coordinated you are to the theme. Flower garlands have the potential to look extremely elegant and absolutely beautiful… Don’t miss the opportunity to make sure yours are too!
