Have you ever wondered why brides seem to love neutrals? They seem to love the vintage pearl and ivory drapes… they seem to love their pastels. I know it looks beautiful, in fact stunning when done well, but why does every bride go for almost the same theme? (This obviously is not including the accent colour, I will come to that!)

When I was choosing my wedding decor I thought, you know what, I’m going to be different. I chose to wear a traditional asian bridal outfit with a twist. I wore a red and gold gharara – traditional, but the shade of red was bright, in fact you could probably call it coral red – daring. My outfit included hints of floral embroidery showcasing shades of red and pink with dark emerald thread-work in the design of leaves amidst the heavily embellished gold beadwork – a modern addition to my dress. Lastly to finish it off, my outfit had magenta piping and pearl beads at the edges. I was so proud. I was proud because I had designed this outfit from scratch, bought the materials myself and took it straight to the workshop to have the work done as I desired. Where am I going with this? Well… I loved the colours I had chosen and wanted my theme to reflect this. I decided I was going to opt for an enchanted theme: ivy leaves with bright coloured flowers. With so many flowers to choose from, the world was my oyster; Would I pick red roses, pink freesias or coral peonies… I was spoilt for choice. I was excited because no one I knew had ever done this before. Surely alarm bells should have been ringing by then? Why has no one ever done this before? In theory the idea is great and would look incredible. It was then that it dawned on me the reason why dark leaves and bright coloured flowers were a bad idea.

If I ended up having the decor I initially wanted, I would have been hidden in my own wedding. The stage would have upstaged me! In pictures I would have blended in with the decor, so as every bride’s fear is looking fat on their wedding day, if I chose coral red flowers for my wedding stage I probably would have ended up looking like a giant tomato! The bride should be the centre of attention on their wedding day. All eyes should be on them. It’s their moment to shine and the best way to do that is to make sure the colours around them complement their outfit rather than be exactly the same. Differentiate with an accent colour but make sure majority of the decor is neutral. That is how you can make your wedding unique to any other. Don’t make the wedding decor blunder that I was almost about to make! I’ve seen it happen to brides and I don’t want it to happen to you! 🙂
