When we think of wedding cakes, we think traditional fondant cakes with countless flowers, potentially with edible embellishments and glitter. You could have a basic cake (which for a wedding would be at least a 3 tier wedding cake) or you could make it more extravagant: You could increase the number of tiers of cake; you could have a variety of flavours; you could have an intricate piping design; and/or you could add the best flowers surrounding or between each tier of cake. There is so much you can do, and needless to say, cakes nowadays seem to be a necessity at weddings. We all are guilty of wanting the best wedding, the best decor and the best cake so when trying to make sure our cake has all of the above we fall into the trap of paying an extortionate amount for something people may not even get to eat and will spend about 2 minutes looking at (10 seconds appreciating).
In this situation, especially if you are looking for opportunities to budget but don’t want to compromise on design, I would recommend fresh cream cakes (in particular from Cake Box!). I went to a wedding reception where they had 3 tiers of fresh cream cakes (not layered but on individual cake stands since fresh cream cakes can’t hold weight). Everyone loved the idea! The cakes were cut then and there and were handed out for all the guests to eat which meant none went to waste, it was literally for the day itself and it looked really pretty. What I love about fresh cream cakes which a lot of people don’t know is that you can experiment with design. For my sister’s bridal shower I had asked Cake Box to create a duck egg blue fresh cream cake with pink flowers and draw white pearls over the cake. This was the final product:

The cake was a total hit. It tasted great, looked great, and price wise cost less than half of what this would have cost if it was a fondant cake. Since then I’ve always opted for a fresh cream cake and have continued to experiment with design. Cake Box never fails to deliver…!
